HELPING OTHERS

Classic American Muscle and Streetrods Car Club, Inc. (CAMS) of Sherwood, Arkansas, was founded in August of 2000 by a group of automobile enthusiasts interested in good family fellowship, car shows, cruising and helping non-profit organizations in their fund-raising efforts. Because of our dedicated sponsors and club members, we have been able to sponsor the following events and help the following organizations.

·        Dad’s Ole’ Car Day at the Veterans Hospital in North Little Rock, Arkansas (held annually on Father’s Day). Veterans Healthcare System, this hospital for veterans treats primarily long-term patients, many of whom are permanent residents due to war injuries. Father’s Day, like most holidays, is a time when numerous people visit their friend or family member in the hospital.

Dad's Ole' Car Day gives veterans and their families something fun to enjoy together. Patients, visitors, and hospital staff pour onto the parking lot to enjoy an afternoon looking at the cars and sharing memories. Many of the patients are in wheelchairs, walkinDads Ole Car Dayg with crutches or dragging an oxygen bottle. Each one has a tale that mirrors those we hear at local car shows: “My father had a car like this,” “I had a car like this when I was in high school,” and on and on. CAMS members host this event, which includes refreshments, at no charge to spectators or to those who bring their vehicles. It is one of the most gratifying afternoons you could spend in your hot rod.

·        National Street Rod Association (NSR) Inspection Day. This annual event is held the third Saturday in March in North Little Rock’s Burns Park. Streetrodders from all over Arkansas now consider this the coming-out party each year. There is no charge for this event. Last year NSRA representatives inspected more than 100 cars.

·         CAMS was also one of the founding sponsors of Cruisin’ for a Cure which benefited the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation. While this show was discontinued after three years, it drew as many as 325 vehicles and over 5,000 visitors each year.

·         CAMS helps raise funds for Treatment Homes, Inc. (THINC) which gives children with emotional or behavioral problems a chance to experience family life in a caring family environment. THINC foster parents show these kids that someone cares about them in spite of their difficulties.

·         Arkansas Pediatric Facility: CAMS’ donations helped remodel the kids’ bedrooms—making them fun and colorful. In the past we’ve purchased not only clothing for children who had been admitted with just the clothes they were wearing, but also equipment for the kids and even glasses (if Medicaid would not cover them).

·         When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and a tornado tore through Mena, Ark., CAMS was there with donations to the Salvation Army and Red Cross to help with disaster relief.

·         In 2008 CAMS helped Hearts & Hooves, a therapeutic riding center in Sherwood, raise $17,000 through the “Hearts, Hooves & Hotrods Car Show."

·         In 2010 CAMS established the annual Ben Garcia Memorial Scholarship Fund. This tool scholarship is designed to assist one of the Pulaski Tech students in the Automotive Technology Division get established in the vehicle technology or restoration industry.

·         CAMS has also made contributions to other non-profit organizations including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Little Rock Compassion Center.
