Sherwood Car Club provides scholarship for PTC student

NORTH LITTLE ROCK -
Classic American Muscle and Streetrods, Inc. (CAMS) has provided the Pulaski Technical College Foundation with a $250 gift to establish the Ben Garcia Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is named in honor of Ben Garcia, a longtime club member who was serving as the club’s vice president at the time of his death in June 2009. “Ben would be so honored by this scholarship,” said his wife, Donna Garcia of Maumelle. “He wanted to help people, and he wanted to help get younger people interested in the hobby he loved so much.”

Students enrolled in their final semester of Pulaski Tech’s automotive technology or automotive collision repair programs are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The award enables the recipient to purchase tools necessary to get established in the automotive technology or restoration trades.

Jason Kyle, 38, of North Little Rock, has been selected to receive the scholarship for the spring 2010 semester. Kyle enrolled at Pulaski Tech in fall 2008 and has maintained a 3.8 grade-point while attending college full-time, working part-time at the college and part-time at Cold Stone Creamery in Little Rock.

Kyle is working to complete his technical certificate in automotive technology and hopes to work for a dealership and one day own his own automotive shop. The scholarships, he said, will help him greatly as he gets started.

“The club has really embraced this,” said Jim Larmoyeux, president of CAMS. “We’ve had several members who would like to see us expand the scholarship.”
